“Hummingbird” is the name of the new search platform used by Google as of September 2013, the name comes from being “accurate and fast” and designed to better focus on the meaning behind the words.
Hummingbird places more attention on each word in a question so that the whole question – whole sentence or conversation or meaning – is taken into account rather than specific words. The goal is that pages that match the meaning mean better, rather than pages that match only a few words.
Google Hummingbird is designed to apply opinion technology to billions of pages across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which can provide better results.

What is Google Panda?
Google Panda Update is a search filter introduced in February 2011, which meant that low quality sites could not work in Google’s highest search results. The panda is updated from time to time. When that happens, sites that previously met may escape if they have made the correct changes. Panda can also capture places that fled before. An update also means “false positives” can be released.
What is Google Penguin?
Google launched the penguin update in April 2012 to better capture sites that are believed to spammy search results, especially those who do it by purchasing links or obtaining them through link networks designed to promote Google rankings. When a new penguin update is released, sites that have taken actions to remove bad links (for example, through the Google Disavow Links tool or for removing spam can retrieve ratings. What is Google Pigeon?
“Pigeon Update” launched on July 24, 2014 for US English results, is a new algorithm to provide more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are more closely linked to traditional web search signals. Launched June 2013 – “Payday Update” was a new algorithm aimed at cleaning up search results and other heavily spammed questions.
What is Google Pirate?
Google’s pirate update is a filter introduced in August 2012 to prevent sites with many copyright infringement reports filed through Google’s DMCA system to rank well in Google’s ads. The filter is updated periodically. When that happens, sites that have previously been affected can escape if they’ve made the correct improvements. The filter can also capture new places that fled as captured before, plus it may release “false positives” that were captured.
What is Google EMD?
The EMD Update for “Exact Match Domain” is a Google filter launched in September 2012 to prevent low quality sites from being ranked well, just because they had words that matched search terms in domain names. When a new EMD update happens, sites that have improved content can get good rankings. New sites with bad content – or those previously missed by EMD – can catch up. What is Top Heavy?
Top Heavy was launched by Google in January 2012 as a means to prevent sites that were “heavy” with ads from ranking well in their listings. Top Heavy is updated periodically. When a new high-end update happens, sites that have deleted excessive ads may return the lost rankings. New places that are considered “heavy” can be captured.
